"Reading is the gateway for children that makes all other learning possible"
Barack Obama
Phonics is giving primacy at Layton Primary School. Our bespoke systematic synthetic phonics programme, ‘Layton’s Letters and Sounds’, unlocks the phonetic code for pupils to begin their reading journey. Children segment and blend with increasing confidence as they progress through the curriculum. From the moment they start school, for as long as they need it, children access high-quality phonics daily.
This programme ensures children swiftly develop the skills required to unlock their reading potential and progress from learning to read to reading to learn. They are encouraged to apply their phonetic knowledge across the curriculum to embed this within their long-term memory to develop the habits of decoding and encoding.
Home reading books align with each pupil’s phonics stage until they reach stage 6. Reading at home is valued and celebrated by logging individual’s engagement in reading using Boom Reader.
