"Where words fail, music speaks"
Hans Christian Anderson
In music, we aim to develop a love of music in our pupils, as well as develop their own skills as musicians. Through this, pupils will increase their self-confidence, creativity, and sense of achievement. Pupils will experience a range of musical genres and styles and will be able to think critically about these using musical terminology to show their understanding.
Within lessons, pupils will be confident to take risks musically and develop their resilience as musicians. Pupils will have repeated opportunities to experience, rehearse, and perform music to both their peers and wider audiences. Our music programme enables children to understand musical concepts by revisiting these over time with increasing complexity. We believe that learning about the same musical concepts through a range of different musical activities enables a deeper learning of musical skills. All musical learning is built around the interrelated dimensions of music, and these are structured into a spiral curriculum. Children will begin to experience these elements of music from Foundation Stage, and they will be built upon throughout their learning journey within music.
We have an ever-developing extra-curricular music offering available, including peripatetic instrumental lessons and school choir. Children in Key Stage 2 also take part in whole-class instrumental tuition in brass, guitar, and samba drumming from professional musicians. These opportunities expose pupils to a wider range of instruments, genres, and performance styles. This allows pupils to see themselves as musicians and begin to see the opportunities available to them.
