Design Technology

‘Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes, design is knowing which ones to keep’

Scott Adams

Our vision for Design Technology is to use our creativity and imagination to design, make and evaluate products which solve real-life problems whilst working within relevant contexts.

At Layton Primary School, our intent is to develop pupils’ practical skills by encouraging them to solve problems based on initial exploration and research. Children build technical knowledge in structures, mechanical and electrical systems, and food and nutrition to use and apply their knowledge to real-life contexts, whilst evaluating and reflecting upon what they have learnt.

We encourage our pupils to have a hands-on approach to Design Technology and, within every unit of DT, children follow the process of :

  • Investigate, disassemble and analyse existing products.
  • Make observational drawings.
  • Communicate their design.
  • Choose tools and equipment for a purpose.
  • Select materials for a specific purpose.
  • Use tools and equipment.
  • Create, test and evaluate prototypes.
  • Make their product.
  • Evaluate.

Food technology is a crucial element of our curriculum, as we believe that children should be taught the importance of nutrition and how this affects our bodies, and given the skills to prepare and make healthy, nutritious meals.

Our bespoke Design and Technology curriculum ensures that children leave our school fully equipped with the necessary skills, confidence and creativity to continue solving problems and effectively building solutions in Key Stage 3 and for the rest of their lives.
