Art and Design

"Vision – A blank canvas has unlimited possibilities"

Stephanie Perkins

At Layton Primary School, our Art and Design curriculum is designed to ensure children develop their artistic skills progressively over time and apply these through a variety of media to create finished pieces of work which utilise the knowledge they have learnt.

The spiral curriculum ensures that children develop substantive knowledge in how to develop their ideas through how art evokes emotions, processes that artists use and visual language. Children master practical skills through building knowledge of effects and techniques, colour theory and media and materials. Throughout school, children take inspiration in art and design, gaining knowledge and exposure to artists and artisans from a range of styles and periods.

Our curriculum is designed in such a way that children build on the disciplinary skills learnt in the previous year in develop ideas, mastering practical skills and taking inspiration from artists and artisans.

Children are involved in evaluation, dialogue and decision-making about the quality of their outcomes and the improvements they need to make in their sketchbooks. Children talk confidently about their own learning journey and have a growing understanding of how to improve.

Our pupils leave primary school equipped with a range of techniques and the confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation for their Art and Design learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
